New Conservatory Theatre Center has been the site of some ups and downs for me from production to production.

In particular, I’d like to highlight the leadership of Founding Artistic Director Ed Decker, who leads with gentleness and focus. It is truly lovely to work with someone who has such vision and is also so good at listening and collaborating.

On the flip side, I’ve had experiences with directors at NCTC that have felt almost rudderless. The space is a bit cramped backstage, though I’ve seen improvements, which makes me hopeful. All in all, I’d say this is a theater where it is worth working if you are excited by the production itself.

Current pay is a stipend that sits just under SF minimum wage (about $3000 for a production). However, I must note that this pay has increased in the last several years (from about $750 for a production), showing to me that the theater is committed to making adjustments to better compensate artists–a trend that I hope continues up to at least SF minimum wage.
