Oakland Theater Project (formerly Ubuntu Theater Project) is a truly delightful place to work. The artists involved are incredibly supportive and genuinely interested in making thoughtful, rigorous art while also fostering a supportive and welcoming work enviornment.
One element actors should be aware of: OTP’s current workspace does not have a very robust backstage. They currently share a space with Flax Art store, and so the dressing room area is not ideal. That said, I see improvements all the time and I’ve found it completely worth it to work there, even if I haven’t been super comfy in my time offstage during performances.
Pay is Oakland minimum wage, but they also hire Equity.
Check out a show at OTP and work there if you can! This is one of the rare Bay Area theater companies that genuinely fosters community, rather than just saying they do.
